I miss Japan very very much
and there were many things i never got around to figuring out.

I could handle the "yaki-imo" song - its goes:
"yaki-imo etc etc"

BUT what is the POLE song?

you know, from those trucks that sell POLES for drying your washing on the balcony?

The plaintive yaki-imo song is one of my favorite things ever in Japan.

I was first exposed to these sweet potatoes when I lived in Kyushu for a year. Way out in rural Miyazaki, we didn't have a truck, there was an actual sweet potato hand cart in what passed for the entertainment district in town. I ate many late night potatoes after an evening out with my boss and his friends.

The potatoes and the song give me that really nostalgic feeling. I guess I am turning into a real Tokyoite: I have my longing to be back in the countryside, but just as long as I don't have to actually go live there again. The sweet potato song is enough.

Here in Kyoto, not only have the sweet potato trucks taken to the streets, but the oil trucks as well. Now that everyone is starting to use their heaters there will no doubt be a rash of chonaikai representatives stickering the neighborhood with flyers detailing the disasters which can be caused by fire. One year a low-flying helicopter even broadcast a fire safety message with a powerful megaphone. Ah yes, the seasons are changing in Japan. And I love every minute with this crazy bunch : )

Sweet potatoes are my favorite. Granted, I defile them with a bit of butter and cinnamon. Please, I beg of you, do not hurt me.
