Has anyone seen one of these badges being worn?
According to a news story today, they are being handed out on the Tokyo railway system to pregnant women.
The badge, which says “There is a baby in my stomach” is supposed to prompt people to give up their seat on the train for the wearer, stop smoking near her, etc.
A nice idea; I wonder if anyone will wear it. I’m going to print one out for my pregnant friend.

That is a neat idea – like the “Baby on Board” tag for human beings instead of cars. You’d think that people would notice without the sticker though.
Of course if this kind of human-bourne signage really works, then I’m in the market for a 禁煙 t-shirt.
They recently did the same for pregnant people in London. Most of the feedback I had heard was that people were embarrassed to wear it although I’d personally welcome the clarity of knowing someone is pregnant.

We have been having similar problems in Toronto.. I wondered on our site if we should adopt this sort of thing.

I haven’t seen the actualy badges yet, but there’s a giant poster for them in Shimokitazawa station. I think the Japanese one looks a bit more fetching than the pun-ish, wahey! baby on board! London badge.
Pawel: You’re right that people should offer a seat whether they’re wearing a sticker, but thinking back to when my wife was pregnant, it wasn’t until about 6 months that it became obvious to people that didn’t know her that she was pregnant.
I sometimes see someone that I think may or may not be pregnant, but don’t want to risk offering them a seat in case they aren’t pregnant and get offended…
Cheers Stephen. I read your post now and Shy’s as well. It’s surprising to hear about very pregnant being ignored like that. When it happens in Tokyo, I put it down to people being too shy to give up their seat.
