Famima!! is a convenient store

FamimaI am working at the Tokyo Shiodome building in an area called sio-site. In the 1F and 2F, there are shops and restaurants. One of them is Famima!!. I found Famima!! in Hollywood and Santa Monica in the U.S. when I visited there and it’s very interesting because they looked like trendy spots. Famima!! is a special version of the convenience store "Family Mart". The difference between a regular Family Mart and Famima!! is the selection of goods. Each Famima shop can choose unique items according to its location and situation. But Family Mart has the same items all over Japan.

In Hollywood, Famima had Japanese magazine and sushi, edamame, Japanese sweets and more Japanese items. In the Shiodome building, BGM is Jazz and Rock music and they sell MUJI items and foreign stationary. Famima!! can be cool because it has Japanese items in the U.S. and it has foreign items in Japan.

Fish sausage

Sausage"Sushi Police" :-) works in French already. This page has a list of recommended 50 Japanese restaurant in Paris. Do you think France and Japan look so nervous for their own original food? he he he.

So I will pick more relaxed Japanese food topics. The theme is   "fish sausage". We eat fish traditionally and I think we started other meat regularly after ww2, just 60years or so ago. Fish sausage is made from fish, tastes like fish, and is cheaper than real meat sausage but looks like "western real sausage". That was a sales point before. Japanese like fish sausage but we also have a cheap image and a self-flagellating image too. he he he. But the reason why Japanese made fish sausage is not so funny. It’s related to  Operation Castle which was a series of high-energy nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll beginning in March 1954 when  Daigo Fukuryu maru was bombed. Nifty Portal Z has some posts about fish sausage, this is  "order 150 portions of fish sausage in Izakaya". Don’t misunderstand, usually Izakaya or Japanese restaurant don’t have fish sausage on their menu. But  Sakura Suisan has it, they are a chain in Izakaya to help poor students. For example, you can eat rice, miso soup and egg as much as you want for about 500yen at lunch time. This is one portion fish sausage that costs 50yen. Mayo is included as dip on the side. Then they order 150 portions. But they eat them all in various ways. It looks delicious actually. This is a post "Push touch panel by sausage". They work fine, we don’t need fingers.

Popular chocolate in Japan

choco.jpg I am eating Sukeroku sushi for lunch now. Sukeroku is a package of roll and Inari sushi. Originally Sukeroku is a title of Kabuki. The story of Sukeroku is the love affair of Mr. Sukeroku and the Oiran "A-ge-ma-ki." We call deep-fried tofu which is a main ingredient of inari "A-ge" and we call roll sushi "maki." That is the why the package is called Sukeroku. It’s a kind of Edokko wit. Sushi is good, but I really love pickled ginger, "gari". I can eat gari as my afternoon snack. (I have never eaten it as a snack though; I mean I like it that much.) Why do we call it "gari"? In the Japanese wiki it is said that when you eat gari, it makes the sound "gari gari," or when you cut ginger it makes the sound "gari gari." Well, I suppose this doesn’t make sense. In your country a pig says "oink," and in this country a pig say "boo boo." By the way, it is very easy to make gari at home. In winter time, it works to warm up your body.

I am eating sushi and I am looking for some good topics to write, but today is a very poor topic day again. So I will pick "the best selling chocolate slab in Japan." I found this ranking on the Nikkei site.

In Japan, Meiji has an overwhelming share of the chocolate market. I wrote I love 99%, actually that my favorite slab is Meiji chocolate too. My No.2 is Kiri no ukifune(a vessel in fog). It has many bubbles inside, so that gives it a very light taste. And No.3 is Chocolife. It has 8 different tastes and each package has only 4 pieces of thin chocolates. So we don’t need to worry about eating too much.

Talking about chocolate slabs, I saw many chocolate bars in the U.S but I don’t remember about slabs. Maybe I saw Hershey’s?? I am not sure. On the other hand, there are not so many chocolate bars in Japan; maybe Snickers and Kit Kat? Ha ha, both are U.S products. I don’t know why, maybe Japanese don’t eat so much chocolate all at once. Slabs are easy to break but bars are not easy to break without biting. What do you think? I wrote about Kit Kat in this entrance exam post. The BBC picked the same topic in this news.
