Lucky you have actually seen it already!
Although Japan won the Miss. Universe and Japan came first-runner-up last year, we have not seen the contest. Since Miss. Universe has not been so popular and paid much attension till last year, there was no LIVE TV show for Japanese.
I know that FOX is showing the contest on the 6th, but many Japanese people don`t have the cable, so even Japanese women have been very competitive, we have yet really seen how they have been competing for the past years.

I wish I saw how she walked the run-way!!

I think a few other contestants might be a bit prettier than Riyo Mori in term of look but over all she got the total package that others don't. There were two things that help her really stand out to take the miss universe title home in my opinion. Her personality interviewed and the swimming suite competition that separated her from her competitors. There is no one come close to her especially the way she walked and posted up her body during the swimming suite competition. Congratulation to Miss Japan and her country!

Yeah, polical factors may play a great deal in such contest. I mean it is Miss. Universe, so they have to choose the one to represent the year`s most beauty. Although being said Japan being neutral, there were many other contestants who won the prices including China, Phillipins, and South Korea. So... is this only Japan or more Asia being a favor in Miss. Universe lately?

I've never followed Miss Universe, myself, but I was thinking that politics could also be a factor. We see it in the Eurovision Music Contest in Europe. Contestants from politically-controversial countries don't win because too many other countries dislike them. So the UK, France, etc, never do well.
As Japan is viewed as pretty neutral outside of Asia , that could be a factor.
